  2. that borders on Somalia. It is a desert
  3. plateau, rising to 1,000 m/3,280 ft,
  4. inhabited mainly by Somali nomads practising
  5. arid farming. A claim to the area was made by
  6. Somalia in the 1960s, resulting in the
  7. guerrilla fighting that has continued
  8. intermittently. It is one of five new
  9. autonomous provinces created in Ethiopia
